Old Architecture of Assam

A Personal Documentary Project
During my time in Assam, I found myself drawn away from the well-known landmarks and into villages where traditional homes still stand.
Built with bamboo, mud, timber, and local craftsmanship, these houses are more than structures—they represent generations of knowledge about climate, materials, and sustainable living. Many are positioned alongside water channels and connected by handcrafted bamboo bridges, demonstrating how architecture can work in harmony with the surrounding landscape.
This project documents not only the buildings, but also the craftsmanship, construction techniques, and the people who continue to preserve this architectural heritage.
This is only the beginning of the project. There is much more to document, and I look forward to returning to Assam to continue building this visual archive of its disappearing vernacular architecture.
